As a family we sat down and watched the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony last night and really enjoyed it. Of course, I would have loved to have seen it live at BC Place, but seeing it with my kids in the comfort of our own living room was a precious moment I won't soon forget. The kids loved it. I enjoyed hearing them scream, "Wow, how are they doing that! It's magical!".

As with anything, it has been met with some criticism and I think for mostly one reason: China. Yes, China's opening ceremony at the 2008 Summer Games was epic. They will not be matched for many years to come. Though last nights performance was not perfect (a less than stellar lip synced performance, and a technical failure at the worst moment to name a couple of downers) it was fittingly and uniquely Canadian. From what I've seen of China, and I hope this doesn't come across offensive in anyway, their people exemplify regimented precision and their ceremony reflected that in an epic way. But we are Canadian. The true north strong and free. I think we gave the world a beautiful sampling of our individuality, freedom of expression, and cultural diversity in an excellent way.
